何度も何度も、泣きながら訴えていました。すると、周囲の看護師たちも泣き始めました。人工呼吸器を装着したくない気持ちを痛いほど理解できたからだと思います。
他の病院のことは調べてみないと分かりませんが、私が勤務していた病院では、人工呼吸器をつないで生還した例は1割ほどで、9割が亡くなっていました。人工呼吸器につながれるということは、死刑を言い渡されるようなもの。そのことをほとんどの患者さんが知っていて、彼も知っていました。だから泣いて拒んだのです。
