死者数について中国政府の公式発表は319人だが、正確な数は今もわからない。2017年に機密解除された英公文書には、事件当時の駐中国英大使が中国政府筋から発生直後に得た情報として、「少なくとも1万人」との推計を英外務省に伝えたと記されている。

In a widely reported 2017-declassified cable sent in the aftermath of the events at Tiananmen, British Ambassador Sir Alan Donald initially claimed, based on information from a "good friend" in the China State Council, that a minimum of 10,000 civilians died,[204] an estimated number much higher than other sources provided.[205] After this declassification, former student protest leader Feng Congde pointed out that Sir Donald later revised his estimate to 2,700–3,400 deaths, a number more consistent with other estimates.[206]
