 最近、コロナがパンデミックからエンデミックになる、とかいう記事を読むことがあるのだが、そもそも違いはなにか？

What’s the difference between a pandemic, an epidemic, endemic, and an outbreak?

AN EPIDEMIC is a disease that affects a large number of people within a community, population, or region.
A PANDEMIC is an epidemic that’s spread over multiple countries or continents.
ENDEMIC is something that belongs to a particular people or country.

 

Epidemic vs. Pandemic

A simple way to know the difference between an epidemic and a pandemic is to remember the “P” in pandemic, which means a pandemic has a passport. A pandemic is an epidemic that travels.

 Epidemic vs. Endemic

But what’s the difference between epidemic and endemic? An epidemic is actively spreading; new cases of the disease substantially exceed what is expected. More broadly, it’s used to describe any problem that’s out of control, such as “the opioid epidemic.” 

Endemics, on the other hand, are a constant presence in a specific location. Malaria is endemic to parts of Africa. Ice is endemic to Antarctica.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declares a pandemic when a disease’s growth is exponential. This means growth rate skyrockets, and each day cases grow more than the day prior.

WHAT IS AN ENDEMIC?

An endemic is a disease outbreak that is consistently present but limited to a particular region. This makes the disease spread and rates predictable.

Endemics, Epidemics and Pandemics

Endemic is derived from Greek en meaning in and demos meaning people.

An epidemic is derived from Greek epi meaning upon or above and demos meaning people

A pandemic is derived from Greek pan meaning all and demos meaning people

「エピデミック」は特定の地域の多数の人々に影響する病気、

「パンデミック」は国境を超えて多数の人々に影響する病気　

両者とも急増して、予想を超え、制御困難なもの　

対して、「エンデミック」ある地域に限定された常在する病気で予想可能。

「エピ」は「上」「パン」は「すべて」「エン」は「中」を表す接頭語で、「デミック」は人々
