This disconnect between personal financial interest and partisan lean may be partly explained by the fact that increasingly, other things matter more than money when it comes to political affiliation. According to Gallup polling, the proportion of Americans who say the gap between rich and poor is America’s most important problem, at 2%, is much smaller than those who cite immigration (11%) or race relations (7%). And there is evidence that factors including location, race and religion influence party affiliation more than income does.

Another reason for voting against one’s economic self-interest is the belief that Washington won’t successfully implement transformative economic policies –good or bad.

投票行動で、金より大事な政策がある、と。また、そもそも政府の経済政策で世の中が変わると思っていない人が多いんだ、と。

Children growing up in extreme poverty or exposed to insensitive parental practices may also grow up believing that their lives are risky and that caution is warranted.

While political conservatives often derive support in the midst of external threats that reinforce their worldview, we are currently experiencing a largely internal threat—from the pandemic—that encourages us to seek help and support from our political leaders.

　仕事を奪う移民というイメージを作ってその恐怖を煽る、共和党は伝統的宗教的価値を保護していると宣伝しており、カソリックの多い移民たちになじむ、また、中国のズルで自分たち底辺のものがひどい目にあっているなどナショナリズムを煽る、クリントンなど上から目線のエリートだと宣伝する。予想困難な貧困な地域で育った人たちは、不安定な変化・脅威から自分たちを守り、安定を約束してくれる保守を選好するのかもしれない、みたいなかんじかなあ。

ーーーIt's economy, stupid　が間違っているとはいわないが、それだけじゃだめで、It's patriotism, stupid の側面も強いと思うよ。
