Britain used 40% of its national budget to compensate 46,000 slave owners

In 1833, Britain used £20m, 40% of its national budget, to compensate 46,000 slave owners when slavery was abolished. That's the modern equivalent of roughly £17bn.

The amount borrowed for this was so large the government didn't pay it off until 2015.
