The transgender community should have to get medical checks to get their genders formally recognised, the UK’s women and equalities minister insisted https://t.co/6zYxQqOEUC
— Metro (@MetroUK) October 4, 2021
As it stands, trans people must have identified with their gender for at least two years, have a formal diagnosis of gender dysphoria, and submit a medical report of any hormone treatment and surgery.
They also have to formally declare they will continue to live under their gender permanently.
Critics calling for a system of self-identification have said the process is expensive, filled with too much red tape and is offensive in classing transgenderism as a mental illness.
