THE NEW VICTORIANS

Victorian ideas, beliefs, etc. are ones considered to be typical of the time when Queen Victoria was queen, such as a belief in strict moral and religious rules and in the importance of family life:

THE ROUTLEDGE COMPANION TO
FEMINISM AND POSTFEMINISM

[In the name of feminism] New Victorians we are told, "have embarked on a moral and spiritual crusade that would take us back to a time worse than our mother's day -- back to the 19th-century values of sexual morality, spiritual purity, and political helplessness." Their campaign against pornography is not only a threat to free speech; it is a "remnant of the repressive antisex morality that has been used by religious conservatives against women for centuries.

Unlike these "morally driven" feminists, the young women of her own generation (Denfeld was born, the first sentence of her book informs us, in 1967, a year after the formation of NOW) have put all of that old-fashioned morality behind them. They are unmoved by the old-fashioned idea that sex has to be accompanied by love. And they enjoy pornography and uninhibited sexuality as much as the next man. Demonstrating how truly liberated her generation is, she tells us of a poll in which 26 percent of the women (with an average age of 22) and 30 percent of the men (aged about 24) "said they'd been tied up during sex" -- presumably voluntarily and happily.

Thus the new goddess worshipers are akin to the Victorians who represented women as the "guardians of morality." Or lesbianism is equated with the Victorian idea of "heterosexual chastity." Or consciousness-raising is said to induce the same kind of passivity as the Victorian confinement of women to their "private sphere." Or the charge that women pornographers encourage rape is like the claim of Victorian wives that prostitutes seduced their husbands. Or the animus against men evokes the Victorian obsession with "maintaining the chastity of women in a world full of oversexed male predators."
