 But Why replace “Mother” by “Birthing People”?

The term ‘birthing people’ is from the realm of trans-rights activism, and is a step towards making vocabularies less rigid in terms of gender.

Those who advocate the use of ‘birthing people’ say it is not just women who give birth.

Examples: Transmen, Genderqueer people etc – who identify as neither man nor women – also give birth.

Another argument for the use of ‘birthing people’ is that a surrogate can give birth, who is not the ‘mother’ of the child.

子供を産む人には、父親や、代理「母」の人もいるので、「母」という従来の女性を含意する言葉は使わず、”Birthing people”「出産人（しゅっさんびと）」みたいな用語が出てきて論争になっているんだ？
