標準的な解釈を

Narratology の本を読んでいて、「市民ケーン」の解説のところでなるほど、と思ったところがある。まず

Citizen Kane (1941, directed by Orson Welles) is an enigmatic film because it is regarded as one of the greatest of all time, and yet most ‘normal’ people who watch it seem to struggle to see why it holds such status.

英語圏でも、この映画は、専門家には評価が高いが、一般にはなんで？と思われているんだね。

で、最後の言葉「ローズバッド」の謎について、

power and money brought him only frustration, anger and sadness. He was happiest when he was poor, when he was with his parents and when life was simple before he had fame and fortune.

　ローズバッドは子供時代のソリの名前。金や権力は怒りや悲しみしかもたらさないが、親といっしょすごしていた子供の時代は極貧だったが幸せだった、とーーーそれを観衆に読み込ませたかったんだ、と・・・なるほど、と。

　それでも「すごい映画だ！」とは思わないが、アメリカ人が好きそうなテーマだな、とは思う。グレート・ギャツビーでも富と名声の虚しさみたいなのがテーマにあるしな・・・と。

Rosebudは子供時代の無垢さを象徴しているんだ、と。

これが標準的な解釈なんでしょうね。

町山さんはどのように解釈しているのかな、と思ってみると、 

　町山さんの解釈もありえなくはないのだろうが・・・上記のほうが標準的な解釈なんだろうね。

　映画の流れや内容からすると標準的な解釈のほうが説得力はある。町山さんの解釈を通そうとするなら、もっと補強材料が必要だろうね。

　素人からすると映画そのものから素直な標準的な解釈を先にしてもらって、こういう解釈もある、その証拠に云々・・・といった解説のほうがいいかな？

Rosebud meaning in ‘Citizen Kane’ as given by Orson Welles

“Rosebud” is the trade name of a cheap little sled on which Kane was playing on the day he was taken away from his home and his mother. In his subconscious it represented the simplicity, the comfort, above all the lack of responsibility in his home, and also it stood for his mother’s love which Kane never lost.

製作者の意図が解釈の絶対的な基準になるわけではないが、やはり、標準的な解釈に沿ったものになっている。
