What is the Gaza Strip and what is it like to live there? All you need to know The Gaza Strip has been likened to an "open air prison", with Palestinians not allowed to enter or leave apart from in "extremely rare cases". By Yasmine Salam, NBC associate producer

Half of Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip are under the age of 19, but they have few to no prospects for socioeconomic growth and limited access to the outside world.

The International Committee of the Red Cross considers the blockade illegal and says it violates the Geneva Convention, a charge Israeli officials deny. The UN, various human rights groups and legal scholars, citing the blockade, consider the Gaza Strip to still be under military occupation by Israel.

What is it like living in Gaza?

Before this conflict, Human Rights Watch likened conditions in the Gaza Strip to "an open air prison", referring to the restriction of movement Israel enforces on Palestinians there. Israel prohibits Palestinians from entering or leaving the area "except in extremely rare cases, which include urgent, life-threatening medical conditions and a very short list of merchants", according to B'Tselem, an Israeli human rights group.

By limiting imports and nearly all exports, Israel's 16-year blockade has driven the Gaza Strip's economy to near-collapse, with unemployment rates above 40%, according to the World Bank. More than 65% of the population lives under the poverty line, according to the UN, with 63% of people deemed "food insecure" by the World Food Programme.

Little psychological support exists for a generation of children who are "living with the long-term psychological effects of constant exposure to violence", according to a UN report, which described an uptick of mental health issues, including depression, among young people living in the Gaza Strip.

In 2014, during the Gaza War, the Gaza power plant was hit several times by Israeli shelling. Its fire extinguishing systems were struck and its fuel tanks were set ablaze. By 2015, the plant has had some basic repairs and relied on one small fuel tank to operate. The blockade makes maintenance and importing parts very difficult, and limits fuel imports.[7]

Power crisis of 2017
On 16 April 2017, the Gaza power plant closed after fuel supplied by Qatar and Turkey ran out.[8] Hamas blamed the PA for the crisis by not passing tax revenues to Gaza, while the PA claimed that Hamas officials in Gaza were simply incapable of running the plant efficiently.[9] As at 25 April 2017, all power lines from Egypt to Gaza were down.[8][10][11] The electricity supplied by IEC was the only electricity available in the Gaza Strip.

In April 2017, the PA told IEC that it would only pay ILS 25 million of the ILS 40 million monthly bill for Gaza and instructed IEC to reduce supply.[10] IEC reduced supplies to Gaza in May and June 2017, saying the dispute was an internal Palestinian matter.[12][13][14] PA President Mahmoud Abbas was seen as seeking to ramp up pressure on Hamas.[15] The Israeli military and the UN have warned that the electricity crisis and resulting humanitarian crisis may lead Gaza to initiate military hostilities.[16][17] Hamas has labelled Israel's decision as "dangerous and catastrophic", threatening to renew violence

Why BBC doesn't call Hamas militants 'terrorists' - John Simpson Israel Gaza war

Terrorism is a loaded word, which people use about an outfit they disapprove of morally. It's simply not the BBC's job to tell people who to support and who to condemn - who are the good guys and who are the bad guys.

During the 50 years I've been reporting on events in the Middle East, I've seen for myself the aftermath of attacks like this one in Israel, and I've also seen the aftermath of Israeli bomb and artillery attacks on civilian targets in Lebanon and Gaza. The horror of things like that stay in your mind forever.

But this doesn't mean that we should start saying that the organisation whose supporters have carried them out is a terrorist organisation, because that would mean we were abandoning our duty to stay objective.

We don't take sides.

Genocide against Palestinians is a characterization of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict that argues that Israel has carried out or is carrying out some kind of genocide against the Palestinian population, sometimes related to the view that Israel is a settler colonial state.

Historian Ilan Pappe argued that genocide "is the only appropriate way to describe what the Israeli army is doing in the Gaza Strip".[7][8][9]

In a 2023 article, Mohammed Nijim "contends that Israeli policies that were enacted after the introduction of the siege in Gaza amount to slow-motion genocide

Israel's Defence Minister Yoav Gallant drew international condemnation by announcing on Monday a "total blockade" to stop food and fuel reaching Gaza, home to 2.3 million people. Gallant said Israel was battling "beastly people."

"Such blatant dehumanization and attempts to bomb a people into submission, to use starvation as a method of warfare, and to eradicate their national existence are nothing less than genocidal," Palestinian U.N. envoy Riyad Mansour wrote in a letter to the U.N. Security Council on Tuesday, seen by Reuters.

“Israel is targeting everybody, no one knows when they’ll be next,” says Arrej—one of 2.3 million Palestinians facing the Israeli state’s murderous onslaught on the Gaza Strip.

“The scale of this attack is worse than in 2014 and 2021,” she told Socialist Worker as bombs rained down on Deir al Bala in central Gaza. “Israeli ships are firing at us indiscriminately, and in Al Qarara the Israelis have used phosphorus bombs.

“The fear now is that the Israelis want to ethnically cleanse the Palestinians from Gaza into Egypt.”

Israel-Palestine war: US politicians greenlighting 'potential genocide' of Palestinians, analysts warn

Political analysts warn that US blanket support for Israel is leading to mass atrocities against Palestinian civilians

US Senator Lindsey Graham said clearly and unequivocally in an interview aired on Fox News that "we are fighting a religious war, and I am on Israel's side".

Graham's message to Israel was: "Do whatever it takes. Raze this place to the ground."

Israeli air strikes have so far targeted hospitals, mosques, and residential buildings across Gaza. Entire families have been wiped out by the bombing campaign.

So far, in addition to the Palestinians that have been killed, at least 5,339 have been injured. It is unclear how many buildings have been razed, as the number continues to rise by the hour.

The violence has also made its way into the occupied West Bank, where Israeli forces have killed 28 Palestinians

Instead, Biden said with confidence that "we uphold the law of war". However, experts said the US and Israel both have an extensive history of violating international humanitarian law and the laws of war.

"I want to be clear with my words right now. It's rich that the US would claim to abide by the laws of war. Anyone who still believes that the US would uphold the laws of war or respect the international laws it wrote is deluding themselves."
