“The United Nations and its Member States must intensify efforts to mediate an immediate ceasefire between the parties, before we reach a point of no return,” Albanese said. “The international community has the responsibility to prevent and protect populations from atrocity crimes. Accountability for international crimes committed by Israeli occupation forces and Hamas must also be immediately pursued.”

"In the name of self-defense, Israel is seeking to justify what would amount to ethnic cleansing," UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese warned. She highlighted that Israel has previously carried out mass ethnic cleansing of Palestinians during times of conflict.

"There is a grave danger that what we are witnessing may be a repeat of the 1948 Nakba and the 1967 Naksa, yet on a larger scale," she added, referring to the mass expulsions of Palestinians from their homes and land in 1947-48 and 1967. She called for international intervention to prevent a recurrence of such events.

Israel has ordered 1.1 million people in Gaza, roughly half the population, to relocate within 24 hours — despite the continued Israeli bombing that has destroyed much of the territory's infrastructure and a total blockade that prevents residents from leaving. Muhammad Shehada, a writer from Gaza, says the forced relocation of that many people would constitute a "second Nakba," referring to the ethnic cleansing of about 700,000 Palestinians during the establishment of Israel in 1948.
