How Can the World Stand By and Witness Israel’s Slaughter in Gaza?

On Thursday night, an Israeli airstrike hit a building at the compound of St. Porphyrius Orthodox Church in Gaza, one of the oldest churches in the world, where hundreds had sought refuge from the bombardments.

Former U.S. Congressmember Justin Amash has announced that multiple members of his family perished in last week’s Israeli airstrike on the Saint Porphyrius Orthodox Church in Gaza.

The Gaza Strip has been struck by one of the deadliest nights of bombing so far in the war between Israel and Hamas.

At least 400 Palestinians were killed in Gaza in the past 24 hours, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, who warned that rescue operations were becoming more difficult because of the scale of destruction.

The Israeli military said it had hit more than 320 “military targets” in the last 24 hours, in response to Hamas fighters killing more than 1,400 people and taking over 200 hostages on Saturday October 7.

Israeli Journalist Amira Hass: How Can the World Stand By and Witness Israel’s Slaughter in Gaza?

we spoke to senior Hamas official who said the group was willing to free civilians why if you stop the aggression it can be implemented on the next hour tonight we interviewed him again he told us Hamas wants to talk and is open to negotiations so where do we go now stop 01:47 the aggression open the borders we we are ready to release all we don't need to have anyone in our houses I'm talking about stopping the aggression opening the borders uh uh discussing our rights to get rid of this Siege and occupation and everything is on the table to be discussed
ハマスは攻撃をやめて境界を解放すれば人質は解放すると言っている。

 ただ、

アメリカがこの態度だからまだ不可能。多くの犠牲者がでてから停戦・・・アメリカの罪は深い。

Peace activist Hayim Katsman was killed in Kibbutz Holit by Hamas militants who stormed military outposts and villages surrounding the Gaza Strip on October 7. The 32-year-old (seen in the photo on Slide 2) was an academic, gardener, mechanic and DJ who played mostly Arabic music. He also volunteered in the West Bank area of Masafer Yatta, where Palestinians face routine violence from Israeli settlers and soldiers. Since his death, Katsman's family has urged the world not to shed more blood in response to the horrific violence on October 7. "What Israel is doing now is very clearly not for the security of anyone," says sibling Noy Katsman from Vienna. "The real reason is just revenge and killing and distraction [from] the failure of Israel to protect its citizens."

Palestinian analyst Jehad Abusalim says Israel appears to have no plan in Gaza beyond seeking revenge for the October 7 attack by Hamas militants — even if doing so comes at the cost of civilians like Abusalim's grandmother.

When a BBC anchor asked former Israeli peace negotiator Daniel Levy about Israel’s rationale for its devastating siege on Gaza, saying that the “Israelis would say, well look, we are defending ourselves.” Levy’s response quickly went viral.

“Do you really keep a straight face when you say that?” he asked. “Do you think terrorist organizations embedded in populations who are denied their most basic rights are ended once and for all in a military campaign? Does that happen in history?”

Levy, who is based in London, is currently the president of the U.S./Middle East Project. He previously served as an Israeli peace negotiator during the Oslo B talks under Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and the Taba peace talks under Prime Minister Ehud Barak. Since the October 7 attack by Hamas, which claimed the lives of more than 1,300 people in Israel, Levy has been vocal about the response of the Israeli state and the death it is causing in Gaza.

In an op-ed published by the Irish Times, Levy and human rights lawyer Zaha Hassan stressed three points:

Hamas’ attack on Israeli civilians was unconscionable;

Israel’s collective punishment of people in Gaza—notably the cutting off of water, food, and electricity—was as well;

and that “one must address the context of occupation and apartheid in which this is unfolding.”

Without that broader view, they wrote it is not possible “to maintain integrity and be able to plot a strategy going forward in which both Palestinians and Israelis can live in freedom and security.”

1)ハマスの民間人虐殺は悪

2)イスラエルの集団的制裁も悪

3)軍事占領やアパルトヘイトなど現在起きていることのより大きな文脈も考慮にいれる必要がある。

Still, the world is watching closely as events in the region unfold, and any Israeli military strategy that ignores the human costs could ultimately backfire. Already, thousands of Palestinians have been killed in the bombing of Gaza, many of them children. Hundreds of thousands have been forced from their homes. The Israeli government’s decision to cut off food, water and electricity to a captive civilian population threatens not only to worsen a growing humanitarian crisis; it could further harden Palestinian attitudes for generations, erode global support for Israel, play into the hands of Israel’s enemies, and undermine long term efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region.
