Taken together, the currently available behavioral data concerning both cooperation and　conformity are clearly inconsistent with the common view that Japanese are more collectivistic than Americans are. This provides another line of evidence to suggest that the primary reason for the questionnaire studies’ failure to support the common view is not the　reference-group effect but the invalidity of the common view
