A quick reminder: the France was condemned in 2020 by the ECHR for the indignity of its French prisons. 2 years later, prison overcrowding has not decreased: occupancy rate of almost 140%, which means cells of 9 m2 with 3 or even 4 inmates living in them. But also infestations of rats, cockroaches, confinement 22 hours a day, showers 2 to 3 times a week maximum, access to work and care very complicated (waiting list of more than a year). We also add daily violence: in prison it is the law of the strongest, beatings, racketeering, humiliation and bullying, sometimes rape, are the daily life of prisoners. Addictions that are created or continue: drugs circulate easily, many are those who enter clean detention and come out addicted.
In short, prisoners should instead only suffer a deprivation of their liberty (which is already huge), in reality they are just suffering hell. This is probably very pleasing to some, who see it as the right punishment for the offences committed. That can be understood.
But it is unfortunately to forget that 99% of prisoners are destined to go out one day and that it is a question of the protection of society not to transform a prisoner into an asocial beast, in the total inability to reintegrate so much his prison time will have dehumanized him.
